Aitzaz Ahsan to Speak at New York City Bar

I just received news that Aitzaz Ahsan, the leader of the Pakistani lawyer movement, will be speaking at the Association of the Bar of the New York City Bar on Tuesday, July 1st.  This is a huge opportunity to meet and hear a lawyer has put his life on the line for the principles we espouse from the safety of our computer keyboards.  If you’re anywhere near NYC, don’t miss this opportunity.  Here’s the press release:

AITZAZ AHSAN, LEADER OF PAKISTAN’S “LAWYERS’ MOVEMENT,”

SPEAK AT NEW YORK CITY BAR

New York, NY, June 27, 2008 — Aitzaz Ahsan, President of the Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan and the leader of the “Lawyers’ Movement” in that country, will speak at the New York City Bar on Tuesday, July 1st, 2008, at 9:00 a.m. Mr. Ahsan will discuss the latest developments regarding the legal system and judicial independence in Pakistan.

Last November, members of the New York City Bar, along with the New York State Bar, the New York County Lawyers’ Association and other organizations, rallied in support of the lawyers and judges affected by the imposition of emergency rule in Pakistan and the deposing of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. Mr. Ahsan will provide an update on efforts to achieve, as he phrased it in a recent article in Newsweek, “Justice for our Justice,” and the reinstatement of other members of the judiciary.

“We have been very supportive of the efforts of Pakistan’s legal community to promote judicial independence and the rule of law, and are delighted that Mr. Ahsan is here to inform the New York City Bar of the progress on those fronts,” said Patricia M. Hynes, President of the New York City Bar.

Yah this guy is amazing… I would love to go here what this guy has to say but I am on the other side of the country unfortunately.

  2. Bridges to Justice

Just a couple of days after the United Nations Development Program issued a report clearly demonstrating the link between legal empowerment and poverty reduction, we understand how critical Aitzaz Ahsan´s work to promote the rule of law in Pakistan is. Collaborative innovation between legal communities from industrialized countries and legal communities from developing countries is key to help promote judicial independence and the rule of law in these countries. This is what the New York City Bar obviously understood.

This is also what JusticeMakers, a global competition celebrating the heroes of criminal justice, praises: promoting locally-sourced criminal justice initiatives to find solutions to human right challenges in developing countries. Launched on June 26, 2008 the competition is identifying eight “heroes of criminal justice,” who will receive $5,000 in seed funding to implement their initiatives locally. But http://www.justicemakers.net also facilitates discussions and connects passionate members of the criminal defense community with their counterparts from around the world to help share intellectual capital. For all his tremendous work, Aitzaz Ahsan is already a JusticeMaker. Eight other JusticeMakers will be sourced for the sake of the advancement of rule of law worldwide. Let´s hear their ideas.

[Ed. Note:  While I don’t know much about Justice Makers, we certainly favor discussion amongst the criminal justice community in furtherance of justice. ]

Aitzaz Ahsan: U.S. Silent About Ousted Judge in Pakistan

At the request of the New York City Bar, I announced the relatively impromptu talk by Aitzaz Ahsan, leader of the Pakistani lawyers revolt stemming from the ouster of the Chief Justice of their Supreme Court.

I am little surprised that instead of supporting and defending the Pakistan and trying to handle the threats of Taliban, Bait ullah mehsood and war threats from Afghanistan, youa re trying to harras the government of civil disobedience. Please for God sake and for the sake of country help the government to defuse the tension and stabilize the country who is already suffering from other major issues, like food, hunger, terrorism etc.

So rather than worry about Pakistan having a rule of law, you want the trains to run on time?
