There’s Always Law School

Via Seth Godin.

Taylor Mali didn’t teach at my school.  But I had three teachers like him.

Taylor Mali didn’t teach at my daughter’s school.  But she had two teachers like him.

Taylor Mali didn’t teach at my son’s school.  And he’s never had a teacher like him.

Taylor Mali is wrong.  What he’s talking about is what a teacher can make, what a teacher should make.  It’s not what a teacher makes unless the teacher does what Mali says a teacher should do.  There’s no guarantee that a teacher will make what Mali says a teacher makes.  Most fail to live up to the ideal.  Miserably.

Same for lawyers.

There’s no shame in being a teacher.  There’s no shame in being a lawyer.  Taylor Mali’s teacher is all about teaching students.  If he was a lawyer, it would be all about representing clients.  Excellence has become so old fashioned.

I am a teacher. I think this is excellent. I’d love to see where all of those who spurn teachers would be if it weren’t for THEIR teachers. Of course, not every teacher does what a teacher SHOULD do. But this is true in any profession. No profession is defined by the people who don’t live up to what the profession is. Why should that be any different for the profession of teaching?

Let’s not take it too far. Our prisons are full of former students.  It’s that teachers can be great. The vast majority are not. Some are downright awful.
