A Father’s Day Tale

I’m not an easy dad to serve breakfast in bed.  I awake rather early, often before the sunrise, and few young people share my circadian rhythm.  My kids call me a farmer, among other things.  It’s understandable.

But my daughter woke up this morning, on her own, at 7:30 a.m.  It is not a time of Sunday with which she is well acquainted.  She didn’t say good morning to me, but instead quickly shuffled out of the house and got in her car.  She was off to the bagel shop.

My breakfast of preference for Father’s Day is flagels and lox.  Don’t judge me. It’s what I like, and I’m allowed.  There are a few bagel shops around here, but one makes the best flagels, and it always has a long line.  I knew she would go there, and I knew she would wait on line.  That’s my gift from her.

But more than half-hour later, she still hadn’t come home.  No matter how long the line, it shouldn’t take that long.  In my head, I could see an auto accident, my daughter in pain.  I jumped into some clothes, hopped into the car and drove off in search of her.  There is no thought more unbearable than my child needing me and my not being there.

I was about half way to the bagel shop when I got a call from home.  Dr. SJ said, “she’s home.”  I turned the car around.

It turned out that my daughter decided to go an extra step after the bagel shop, and went to Dunkin Donuts to pick me up jelly donut.  I like donuts, as she well knows.

When I arrived back at the house, I gave her a kiss on the forehead. She called me “numbnuts” for not trusting her to be fine.  As I said, my kids have a variety of names for me for different situations.

I told her that I always trust her to be fine, but I will always be there if I think there is any reason why she might need me.  It’s just what a dad does.

It’s a pretty good Father’s Day.  Flagels and lox, a donut and my daughter is fine.  What more could a dad want?

Wonderful anecdote Scott. I too share your enthusiasm for bagels and lox, but just what exactly is a flagel?

Flat bagel, pressed down so instead of the usual round, donut-like shape, it’s flatter, larger, a bit misshapen. It’s almost entirely outside surface area rather than all that doughy stuff inside you ball up and throw at somebody. My preference is the everything flagel.

I wondered about flagels too. Why is it that downstate you stand “on line” but here in Western NY and probably the rest of the country it’s normal to stand in line? I first ran across it in a NY Co. special term case a few years ago. A defendant wouldn’t stand on line at the Centre St. courthouse magnetometer and was charged with a dis con. It’s impossible to stand online. On line. Whatever.

        It is a nice story.

As I lay here in bed reading on my iThingie, my daughter is downstairs making me eggs. Never mind that I’ve already done an 8-mile run and showered.

I returned to my spot. And I wait. And it will taste better than anything else. Because kids.

Last night I briefly reflected on how Father’s Day has changed for me. It saddened me a little. Then my daughter called as she usually does when driving home from her work. Shortly after that, my son sent a text that he arrived safely in Brazil and was going to pick up his World Cup tickets.

I realized, for the first time, that my children have now grown into their own and busy lives, but they still reach out for a touch of home.

It may not be flagels, lox or even a jelly doughnut, but my smile is just as big.

    Happy Father’s Day.

Happy Father’s Day to you, Dan. My son called yesterday because it was the day we demand he call or some amorphous bad thing might happen. I hope he calls again today to wish me a happy Father’s Day, so he an say those three words I long to hear.

You know, some folks think that the best words in the world are “I love you.”

    But they are wrong.

It’s the squeal of a child that yells, “Daddy’s home! Daddy’s home!”

Happy Papa’s day to you SHG and all the others….

    And a happy Father’s Day to you, father Greenfield . . .

My 11 year-old daughter and I spent yesterday together while my 15 year-old was away at an academic conference. We rocked the “Cat’s in the Cradle” three or four times in a row, while singing along and chuckling each time, cuz the older one is begging me for a car when she turns 16 in a few months. She starts her 4-year university the week after she turns 16 in August with a full-ride scholarship, so I guess she needs one. My, how quickly they grow up, don’t they?? . . .

As I’m out the door to spend the day with both of them. A day I will thoroughly enjoy and always cherish . . .

Happy Dad’s day to all the Dads in America from an Aussie Dad of two now grown up , though still my little, girls (21 and 18) who has to wait until the first Sunday of September (no idea why it’s different) for our Father’s day.

Also I have now discovered what Lox is and Flagels and am now very intrigued to try it. Sounds and looks (via foodp0rn sites) yummo!

Happy Father’s Day to all =)

I got to spend today sharing a cup of coffee with my dad (we live in different states) and watching my kids play while we were BSing. It was an accident of a poorly planned wedding (niece) but I was very thankful for the chance to sit as both his son and a fellow father and take in a morning.
