He’s now 36 years old. He was 17 when his parents were murdered. Today, following the reversal of his conviction and grant of a new trial, the New York Times reports that he has been released on $1,000,000 bond, posted by his relatives.
Here’s Marty going in.
Here’s Marty coming out.
Out is definitely better than in. By the way, that’s Bob Gottlieb, Marty’s original trial lawyer standing with him in the picture. Bob used to be younger too.
The DA has announced that he’s going to retry that case. He figures that even if he loses, he had Tankleff in prison for 17 years. But he’ll have an awfully hard time putting witnesses together again, and he’ll look particularly bad and vindictive if the defense kicks his butt.
The District Attorney, Thomas Spota, may want to view it from a different perspective. Give Marty some plea that cuts him loose immediately, and then tell the media what a great job you did protecting the public from the innocent. It could work. The good people of Suffolk County, New York, have other things to worry about these days than Marty Tankleff.
