19 Years And Counting

On February 13, 2007, the first post appeared on Simple Justice. I’ve told the story of how it came to be before, so I won’t burden you with it again. Back then, blawgs were in fashion, and the legal blogosphere was a thriving community. Not so much today, even though a few of us remain, writing daily (or at least regularly) about things that interest us.

Sadly, the synergies of yore no longer exist. Back then, we would regularly riff off each other’s posts and agree or dispute each others views on the issues of the day. I miss those days, but times change and I’m left with no choice but to change with them. At the moment, the pressing and interesting issues mostly revolve around Trump’s bastardization of government. The overwhelming majority of legal issues revolve around Trump, and so he’s become the primary focus of posts here. I’m bored with him, as I would expect most of you are, but that doesn’t change the reality we’re living in.

As always, I appreciate those of you who have stuck with me over the years, as well as those of you who have found SJ over time and see value in reading what appears in this space. I thank all of you who contribute to the costs of keeping this old blawg running. I even appreciate those of you who hate-read SJ, whether because of your feelings toward me or your adoration of Trump.

Ironically, there are probably as many hate readers from the left fringe as there are among the MAGA faithful. Both ends of the horseshoe have far more in common with each other than you do with me. I’m not just good with that, but it validates my deep appreciation of constitutional rights and liberal democracy. I don’t appeal to extremists? Okay then.

I have no idea whether SJ will last another 19 years. I have no idea whether I will. But for now, I still wake up every morning and read of matters, decisions, actions that pique my interest and about which I believe I can contribute worthwhile thought. As long as that’s true, SJ will march forward. Love it or hate it, SJ still here and will continue to be here for as long as I feel the desire to put my thoughts in writing. Thank you for reading.

I only come to this here Hotel for the pictures. And the lobster fajitas.

[Ed. Note: I’ll let the kitchen know. They’re pretty proud of the lobster fajitas.]

I just wanted to say I am a long time reader. I am not a lawyer, but I have always appreciated your viewpoints, and the topics you decide to write about, even though I don’t always initially agree with them. You definitely make me think about things, and I appreciate it very much. I think I have learned a lot from you.

    So thank you.

    [Ed. Note: Thank you, Steven.]

Donated to the cause again. Even if it’s not needed to keep the lights on, hopefully it buys you a couple bacon donuts. Thanks for all the writing.

[Ed. Note: Thanks, Mike. I do love me some maple bacon donuts.]

    Bravo!

Props to you esteemed one, well done.

P.S. It looks like both Bradleys Head and Sultan’s Pool are still available for 2/13/27.

Dang, hard to believe I’ve been reading since almost the beginning. Also, I’m getting old, which probably means you are too. Thanks for all your efforts.

[Ed. Note: I’m 29 again. But you aren’t that kid I met years ago anymore.]

Hey Scott, I found you in law school in probably 2012 and lurked for a long time before daring to comment because you were meaner and scarier back then. Your thoughts and the smacking down of idiots (me included) have been and continue to be extremely valuable to me. Your Hotel is an oddity in a world of siloed echo chambers. One I cherish.

Thank you, thank you, and thank you. All the tummy rubs.

I deeply appreciate Simple Justice. I know that one of your rules is to not make people dumber. This blog challenges me and makes me smarter, and I (along with many others) are better for it.

This post is shocking to me because I must have found you close to the very beginning. I try to comment rarely so as to not risk making anyone dumber (you may remember me from such fascinating comments as: “I’m related to the United Breaks Guitars guy” or “My Grandpa was Gordon Hirabayashi”). I always appreciate your principled view of things, and when I don’t agree it makes me examine my own viewpoint to see if I can make a principled defence of it. Reading your blog talked me off the ledge a few times during the first Trump presidency, and has confirmed to me that my concerns are not unfounded in the second.

Thank you so much for continuing to write every day.

I’ve been an on-and-off again reader for a good long while. Honestly don’t know how far back, but I know it’s been at least a decade, almost certainly more. I know I don’t comment nearly like I used to, but so it goes.

To say this blog has influenced me would be an understatement. It helped solidify in my mind my desire to not just go to law school, but also become a criminal defense lawyer. It’s made me think, made me mad, and made me laugh. Sometimes all in the same post.

I’m quite grateful the blog exists, and that it shall remain.

Still here. Been reading since a couple of years after you started but don’t know exactly when.

Now that it’s warming up for a few days pulling the beefs out of the brine and will be smoking a couple of pastramis this weekend. Expect to see one coming your way. No eating before St. Patties… (Ya, Right 😉 )
