Within days, the reflecting pool went from blue to light green, then bright green. As it turned out, the color American flag blue might not have been a wise choice, no matter how much it appealed to the president’s aesthetic, as dark colors heat water, and warm water breeds algae. In another time, someone might have brought this up before the decision was made, but this was an emergency as it had to get done before the birthday celebration, too quickly for such reflection or bidding.
Then there were pieces of blue material, sheets of it, floating up from the bottom. It was the very dark blue material that was just painted on the bottom of the drained pool for more than $14 million, up from the original pricetag of $1.8 million, Reporters touched these floaters on air so viewers could see how the paint failed to adhere. This did not please the president.
Vandals? Vandals with chemicals? There were Park’s Service employees pouring gallon upon gallon of hydrogen peroxide into the reflecting pool, to no avail, while others waded in the pool with skimmers trying to remove the algae. The president said it was 75% gone. The Interior Department said the water was “crystal clear.” The problem was that people could see the water. But once vandals were to blame, something had to be done.
The United States Park Police have arrested multiple individuals for vandalizing our Nations magnificent Reflecting Poll. Who would do such a thing? These are very serious crimes having to do with the destruction of National Monuments. Years in jail! Work will begin immediately on its repair. President DJT
All they needed was to actually find a vandal, so they did.
Among those accused of vandalism was David Carter Hearn, 67, a cyclist and three-time Olympian as a canoeist who says he stopped at the site on Friday just to have a look, then reached down to touch a strip of peeling blue paint mixed with the algae.
As one does.
The U.S. Park Police arrested Mr. Hearn shortly after, accusing him of destroying government property, a crime that can carry up to a 10-year prison sentence. Mr. Hearn denies the charge.
“I was just a curious, concerned citizen,” he said in an interview. “I guess I was there at the wrong place, wrong time.”
The reason the sentence begins with “among” is a matter of courtesy to the president.
If the president says “many additional people have been arrested,” perhaps it’s true, even if there is no news or other reports of anyone being arrested other than the three-time Olympian, Hearn. But the specifics of the vandalism no one saw have morphed into very detailed accusations.
They took some form of knife or blade, and put a 250 foot long gash into the beautiful facade of what took so much work, competence, and money to build and complete. They also poured corrosive and destructive chemicals into the Pool.
If anyone did that to the reflecting pool, it would be awful and they would, indeed, deserve punishment for their actions. But then, if there was no vandalism, as many people are saying, this was just a failure of planning, design and execution by the no-bid contractor who is either close friends with the president or he doesn’t know the contractor at all,
This is Trump donor and Mar-a-Lago neighbor John Cafaro who got the no-bid contract to install a water purification system for the reflecting pool. He has 2 prior convictions, one for bribing a member of Congress and another for an illegal loan that violated campaign finance… pic.twitter.com/zZ8m23bFUO

Of course, it’s just a reflecting pool, so why are so many people making such a big deal of its failure?
Yes it’s a mystery https://t.co/gILdPsHR6u pic.twitter.com/XmPSHl5dqA

When you turn something into a reflection of the glory of your administration, you shouldn’t be surprised that people take notice. When your initial claim that what’s happening isn’t happening falls flat, then there is nothing left to do but find someone else to blame.
Damn those vandals.
