The Sunday Style section of the New York Times includes stories about the weddings of prominent New Yorkers. It’s a throw back of sorts to the old society days, where the 400 needed to know what was happening with each others. But this Sunday, the main wedding in the Times was a little different.
Instead of some socialite or celebrity, the Times wrote about the wedding of Donnie Andrews to Fran Boyd. The names don’t sound familiar? Well, Donnie was a convicted murderer, while Fran was a junkie. As the Times noted, Donnie was “also a former heroin user,” so that we don’t miss a salient point.
Usually, these wedding announcements and stories talk about how the “groom attended Princeton” and the bride’s father is the “CEO of a major multinational conglomerate.” Not this time.
The bride and groom have turned their lives around, and are now the models for characters in a new television show, which is the real reason why the Times notice them to begin with. But it’s not a bad thing that a couple who came from such ignominious roots has made the Style Section. They even made it big at Gawker.com. Maybe there is hope.
