OT: Futzing With Blawgs

Ken Lammers just CSS’d.  Gideon changed to some type that moves and has fixed his asides, which I guess prevents them from having baby asides.  Bennett has done all sorts of changes to his blawg, so many I can’t count.  Spencer tells me I ought to do this or that from time to time.  Windy too.

My blawg may not be the most visually appealing or technologically cutting edge.  But I have no plans to fix anything.  It’s not that it “ain’t broke,” but I already have my hands full.

The way I have this figured, anyone who comes here does so to read something, or watch the occasional new video on my sidebar.  If they come back, they do so because they want to read more.  No one comes back because they find my blawg so incredibly cool that they want to show it to their friends.

I get complaints about my blawg.  Most of the time, it’s a problem with my program, which the company changes every once in a while and invariably wreaks havoc before they straighten out all the bugs.  They don’t test anything first, so they wait until I email them before figuring out whether their changes cause other problems.  They refuse to pay me for this service, but they fully expect me to let them know ASAP so they can fix the bugs.

There’s a lot I don’t know how to do with computers.  It’s not that I’m terrible for someone of my generation.  I’m not.  But keeping pace with change isn’t always on my front burner.  I try, but there are just too many letters and they explanations of what they mean lack a certain clarity to me.  Also, I don’t see the point.

I just type away and hope something worth reading comes out of my fingers.  I hope that it interests anyone reading.  Some have already told me that I’m boring and ignorant.  Others are more encouraging.  Still, there’s not much more that I can do than write about things that interest me and try to say something that is worth the few minutes a reader loses from their life by stopping here.

I admire the other guys who know far more about the mechanics of all this, and who make a concentrated effort to keep apace of technology and improve the function and appearance of their blawgs.  In fact, I’m a little jealous, as I’m sure they know things I don’t, and I hate being the last one to know.  Gideon has tried very hard to help me change things, but I just can’t seem to pull it off.  He’s been a real pal, and I’m unworthy of his help.

So I have no present plans to make my type move, change the background color or put in the “fix”.  I do, however, plan to keep typing as long as I have something to say.  I hope that’s a good enough reason to check out Simple Justice from time to time.

I figure switching to CSS probably makes me cutting edge about 8 years ago.

Next time you talk to the company that programs your blawg about bugs please tell them to fix the issues with Opera browser. It’s really inexcusable that professional programmers haven’t tested and tweaked for Safari, Opera, IE, and Firefox.

BTW: Take a look around. The really big blogs almost never change their layouts. There’s really no need to unless part of the fun is writing the code (as it is for me).

Your blog has a separate RSS feed for the comments, which the others I read don’t. I particularly like that feature, as I’m not one to check back on older entries for additional comments. And without it, I would have missed that whole hilarious Jerry Springer show you had going on in that entry about the Jesters. So who needs fancy graphics or whatever. Although, if I could order a pizza and pay bills or something while I’m here, that would be pretty awesome. I’ll have a large with everything except olives and anchovies. Oh, and I’m late paying my ISP, so if you could take care of that before they disconn

I’m a computer programmer by training and trade, so fiddling with the website is always a temptation. My blog didn’t really get going until I developed the discipline to stop tinkering with the technology and just write blog entries. You’re doing the right thing.

All WordPress blogs have separate comment feeds and feeds for individual posts and those comments.

Scott, I don’t use the type that moves, Windy does. I use the Word that presses. Much better.
