How to Entice a “White Collar Associate”

While it falls well outside the norm for me to raise (or even read) job listings used on another blawg, this one at Above the Law was just too hard to ignore.

Just so you’re clear, ATL has a primary sponsor, Lateral Link, which is a legal headhunder tapping the huge number of Biglaw associates and Biglaw wannabes.  They would probably come to Simple Justice as sponsor, except for the fact that we have a tenth of ATL’s readership and no one that would interest them at all.  Most of the time, anyway.  But check out the “Lateral Link Job of the Week:”

Because there will always be white-collar work…

Position: White Collar Associate

Location: New York, NY

Description: This top firm is seeking a junior to mid-level litigation associate to join its top -ranked white-collar practice. With approximately 50 attorneys, this firm is consistently ranked as the top white-collar boutique in New York. The firm takes on criminal and civil cases that are often front page news. The firm is known for getting their people great front-line work experience in a variety of interesting cases. This firm is also well-regarded as an outstanding stepping stone to the DOJ as well as the US Attorney’s office.

Notice the highlighted teaser in the last sentence?  While my first inclination is to write a screed decrying in excruciating detail what’s wrong with this sentence, I will demur and let you draw your own conclusions.  I will, however, ask a couple of pointed questions.

To those of you who aspire to practice “white collar” defense at a largish law firm, was it you secret hope to use the position to ingratiate yourself with the United States Attorney’s office?

To those of you who sought a “big time” white collar defender, with the hope of having the slightest chance of winning, did you know that your champion was biding his time until he could jump ship to the prosecution, perhaps using you as his wedge to prove how prosecution-minded he is?

There aren’t that many 50 lawyer white collar criminal defense firms in Manhattan.  Anybody want to guess who is looking for a “white collar associate?”

50 lawyers doing white collar defense is a boutique?

And couldn’t any of those 50 spot the obvious conflict of interest in the ad?

Turk beat me to it. I don’t know all that fancy lawyer speak, but if a firm of 50 lawyers is a boutique, then what the heck are you? A criminal defense super-boutique? An elite boutique? Criminal defense haute couture? This sounds like something Bennett could help us with…

In Manhattan, 50 lawyers is still a “small” or “boutique” firm, since we’re in the land of Biglaw, where 1000 lawyers is no big deal.
