Thank You, Firefighter Patrick Joyce

Much time is spent here being critical of people in the government’s employ, but there is one group that truly serves solely for the public benefit at great personal risk.  Firefighters.  Last night, one who entered a room because of a report that there was someone inside died for his attempt to save the life of another.  This firefighter was Patrick Joyce.

From CBSNews :

Fire officials announced that Patrick Joyce, 39, a veteran Yonkers firefighter, died after reportedly leaping along with two other firefighters from the third floor of a burning house on Waverly Street.

“Three guys got trapped on the third floor and they had to bail out of a third floor window,” said Yonkers Fire Chief George Kielb.

Joyce was pronounced dead about 2 a.m.
I’m not sure what makes a person want to be a firefighter.  They don’t get to boss people around on pain of a good tasing.  They don’t get to steal from drug dealers or get free coffee and donuts from the corner store.  They just help people and sometimes lose their life.

I don’t think about firefighters enough, or appreciate what they do enough.  When I heard about Joyce being forced to jump from a third story window to escape a superheated room, I thought about what a crazy job it is.  Yet there are people willing to do this crazy job to save people like me.  Thank God that the two other firefighters who jumped survived and are in stable condition.  I am deeply sorry that Patrick Joyce didn’t survive.  I appreciate all of them.

Maybe we can take this opportunity to remember what firefighters do for us and appreciate them.  I do.

It’s awfully easy to admire firefighters — both volunteer and staff. But not everything that’s easy to do is wrong to do, after all.

Your NYFD is considered, I’m told by those in the trade, to be the one against which all others are measured. It’s not just that the sheer size of it allows them to bring huge amounts of equipment and manpower to where it’s needed, but the culture — including that of the brass leading from the front. It’s one of the reasons that such a large proportion of the firefighters who died on 9/11 were of senior rank.

Few people appreciate the huge disparity between the number of police officers who died versus the number of firefighters, as well as the rank of firefighters, on 9/11.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Joyce family & his brothers for their loss.

    In another daily heroic event,
We’d also like to recognize the NY firefighter that seemed to be missing in the day long interviews but is clearly visible in the footage. He is seen handing off the boy to the
Good Samaritan. *He probably saves lives all day long and doesn’t do interviews. Without Public Heroes we’d be in deep trouble folks.

My condolences to his family they are highly respected by so many, but not noticed as often as they should be

No reason to tear down the police while praising firefighters. If you haven’t done either job then shut the fuck up.

It’s always wonderful to see any doubt as to how low some scummy cop can go resolved a cop himself.  You are a beacon to all who question why we don’t demand a minimum amount of intelligence before handing someone a gun and shield.  Well done.

Of course, every decent cop will cringe upon seeing how one moron demeans them all.
