2020 Out

When Dr. SJ and I married, the year 2020 was so far in the future that it was the Jetsons. Flying cars. A colorblind society. Everyone wore unitards and was healthy and happy until the age 100. Never would we have imagined it would be a pandemic and a president named Trump. It would have been as ludicrous as WAP becoming our national anthem.

Things didn’t turn out as anticipated. Things rarely do. It makes for interesting times.

The Year of Our Lord 2020 now comes to an end, and many say that it’s been the worst year ever, as if the year 2021 will simply have to be better. I hope so, but then I hope every year will be better than the one before it. As much as I’ve made clear that I view Trump as repugnant, I am not of the view that he’s the problem, but rather the manifestation of the problem. I do not think we’ve solved anything that gave us Trump as punishment, and fear that this failure will become worse in 2021 as the reality hits home that what ails us is not only uncured, but has metasticized.

I hope I’m wrong. But I don’t think so. I think we’re just changing the head on the corpse.

Thank you for your contributions to SJ, the brilliant ideas that occasionally show up in the comments that make me smarter, more aware or even less stuck in my own old-man-lawyer bubble. I may not like what’s happening, but like everyone else, I need to know what’s happening outside my world.

Thank you for your contributions to the upkeep and maintainence of SJ. You’ve been very kind and generous to keep this hotel filled and running.

Thank you, Chris Seaton, Judge Rich Kopf, Greg Prickett, Chris Halkides, Guy Hamilton-Smith and everyone who has contributed to making us smarter and bringing a smile to our faces. Most of all, thank you Beth, my editor, who saves me from my own dopiness. Without Beth’s dedication, my status as typo kind would be known by all.

Thank you for reading. I would write whether anyone read or not, but it’s a lot more fun knowing that you’re here reading my ramblings.

Good-bye 2020. I hope 2021 is better for all of us.

Thank you all for your writing and ramblings.
May you all get a fun and happy load on tonight with no hangover in the morning.

SHG, your profligate, excuse me, prolific daily disquisitions may serve your inner needs, perhaps. But what you cannot fully know are the many ways your pennings help your readers. As a transplanted “Coastie” hailing from NJ but ailing from too much Midwestern ‘nice’, I for one benefit greatly by your snappy retorts to oft-unthinking comments from the likes of me and others. As for next year, I just hope to see it in its entirety once again. Blessings of many good pulls on the Bowmore 18 in 21.

Thanks for the posts, SHG. And thanks to the readers for their comments. I probably don’t understand a good deal, but together they make me think, and I greatly appreciate that at my age.

Trump has been a convenient foil, because he was there. Woody Guthrie described a similar phenomenon in The Song of the Singing Cricket.

Once Trump is off the stage, even the stupidest people will no longer be misled by those who attempt to misdirect the blame for their own misdeeds to Trump. Most notably, Democratic city officials whose police forces have been beating the shit out of marginalized minorities and peaceful protesters are going to be left in the open, where they will have to take responsibility for their local conduct. Eventually, everyone will realize that the problem never was Trump, and yes, the problem is still here.

They will still blame Trump, or “Trumpinstas”, or “Proud Boys”, or “systemic racism” or anything but their own policies and actions. If they accept their due responsibility for the problems they will no longer be able to scream that the people HAVE to vote for them or progressive policy to “solve” those problems.

    Hotel New Year’s Eve Special–

The cook, who will never be called a chef, decided tonight’s special would be lame duck. I’m figuring he captured a few of the ducks living at the grease pond behind the parking garage. The guy really is a dipshit dumbass.

Using my inherent authority, the special is now bone-in filet and a lobster trail as big as my face. It comes with bottomless whiskey. The price is $275 pp., but the price drops to $1.25 for those who hit the Hotel tip jar.

On this last day of 2020, I just learned that the official SJ computer bit the dust. It has taken its last byte.

Thank you for all you have written here. If I can get anything past you, your contributors, and commenters then I am not as senile as I thought.

Speaking for myself I appreciate that if I post something you deem irrelevant, off topic, even sometimes offensive you let me know. That makes me think I’m being taken seriously.
Knowing that musical offerings are reserved for select contributors I’m hoping you’ll allow this. But if not no big deal.

    Happy New Year!

Thanks for the posts, Scott. I always learn something and try to share the wealth. Have a Happy New Year.

Thanks for allowing me to write my dumb jokes for everyone here for another year, SHG.

Here’s to a better year starting tomorrow!

Happy New Year, Scott. Thanks for your posts that challenge knee jerk reactions. Ever since I read that interview with Conor Friedersdorf, I have been a fan and it has altered my thinking on a number of topics. Thanks so much! Long may you and Simple Justice prosper!

If our host will allow: An incredible piece of music by a departed musician and composer. Every once in awhile we get someone who turns things on their head in a good way. For some reason, this seems to be a good way to start 2021.
