Tuesday Talk*: Why, Oh Why, The Flip-Flop?

The New York Times headline is that Trump “bows to reality,” which would be a perfectly fine explanation for most people. But Trump? The guy who has managed to gaslight/recon January 6, seen by pretty much every American in living color, as a day of love rather than an insurrection? The guy who insists that foreign countries pay tariffs? The guy who feels the compulsion to tell America that he’s smart and a “stable genius” because he remembered five words (which the doctors say no one has ever done before) and everyone who disagrees with him is low IQ and stupid?

Since when did Trump care about reality?

For years, disclosing the Epstein files was a mantra of the MAGA faithful, an emblem of virtue to the faithful that they would cleanse Washington of pedos. And Bondi said the files were on her desk and would be disclosed any day now. And then Ka$h declared there was nothing to see in the files. And on it went, with Trump doing everything possible to keep the files concealed and dissuade his base from caring, telling them it was “boring.”

When the government refused to release the files, playing the grand jury transcript game, screwing with the House Oversight Committee’s subpoena, summoning MTG Boebert to the situation room before turning on her, Trump had staked out his position. Fight at all costs.

But now, with the House poised to vote for release of the files, Trump has made a U-turn and given his blessing to the release of the files, opening the floodgates of House Republicans voting in favor of release. Why?

Will the files be sanitized of all mention of Trump? Will the damning evidence find their way to the shredder? Does Trump believe that his faithful will twist themselves into pretzels coming up with excuses for him? Will they simply ignore their eyes and believe their president? Can release of the files now be trusted to be legit or will his sycophants at the FBI and DoJ make sure their patron is protected from damage?

Why?

If I remember correctly he said something like he wants to release everything Epstein that legally can be released. At the same time is is calling for a big Epstein investigation.

Ooops, sorry, open case, we can’t talk about or release stuff that is part of the investigation. It is the law.

It’s a BS move. The bill would still have to pass the senate and he could sign or veto it. Or he could just direct ‘his’ attorney Bondi to release the files. Fat chance of that.

Why? Because Our Augustus thrives on chaos. To quote another emperor:

“The battlefield is a scene of constant chaos. The winner will be the one who controls that chaos, both his own and the enemies”

Are we going to get 3 more years of this reddit level bit from you?

[Ed. Note: As a general rule, if you don’t care for someone shtick, don’t read it.]

THIS is reddit level slop: “Will the files be sanitized of all mention of Trump?”. How gracious of the Biden DOJ to sit on all the damning files, particularly after the disastrous debate. Proof of good sportsmanship and honorable discourse.

Some of us must stick around for your shtick in order to accurately judge our bets on whether or not you or David Post over at Volokh will suffer terminal and public TDS first. Good news – Polymarket has you in the lead! Three years to go…

You’re apparently unfamiliar with either the nature of Tuesday Talk or common punctuation marks. That was a question, to which the answer can be yes or no. Most of us covered this in elementary school, but not everyone paid close attention.

          1. 208SilverMiner

Yes, the punctuation mark which I clearly included in my quote of an improper call for speculation. And a question which is LITERALLY on the front page of Reddit today. Classy, and has the benefit of demonstrating clear and thoughtful lawyerly thinking.

Twisting the immortal words of N.Pelosi, ‘You have to read it to see what’s in it’. Perhaps you could just rename the Blog to “I hate Trump’. That way I could stop reading it in the vain hope that it still contains something even vaguely about law.

“seen by pretty much every American in living color”

I believe that you are referring to that small (and rapidly shrinking) fraction of Americans who are glued to their TV sets. I was there on January 6th, and what I saw was nothing like the staged production that appeared on the failing MSM channels.

There are plenty of good reasons to criticize Trump. The J6 show isn’t one of them.

People who previously supported Trump are now some of his strongest critics, because he has accomplished none of his promises and has shown himself to be just another greedy politician who will say anything to get elected and then sell his office to the highest bidder. The innovations that he brings to the office are purely stylistic.

It’s likely that the unprecedented delaying tactics, starting with lies and misdirection and ending with an extended shutdown of Congress and the refusal to swear in new members in a timely fashion, was designed to give the Trump team time to scrub everything that incriminates him and his friends. Based on what has already been released, it looks like the files are so huge and so incriminating to so many people, that some interesting things were missed even after years of scrubbing by both sides of the uniparty.

Like Karl Rove, Trump cares about reality to the extent that he manufactures it. What he cares about is winning. When delaying and denying is no longer workable, when he’s no longer able to bully and cajole his “allies” into supporting his ridiculously transparent lies, then he will unapologetically change course. That’s what is happening now.

There’s a sense that the tide is turning on Trump. This is due, in no small part, to the cognitive dissonance caused by his ridiculous, counter factual, assertions seeking to deny unpleasant/ unpalatable realities.

A Politico piece, “7 signs Trump is losing his groove”, calls out some of the instances where Trump’s claims have run aground on the shoals of reality. (When I saw the headline I thought, “Objection! I’ve seen video of Trump dancing. There’s no groove. None whatsoever.”, they probably should have said he was “losing his grip”.) They list a range of issues on which his claims, positions, assertions are falling short/ failing. Even MAGATs are coming to realize that he’s delusional and his claims reflect what he wishes were true rather than what is.

Trump cares about winning, but it’s becoming ever more clear that he’s a loser.

I agree that Trump has lost his mojo, but the obvious reason for that is that he has either abandoned, repudiated or shirked everything that he promised. The most important thing that he promised was “America First” and he is now openly advocating for “America Last.” He promised no more stupid wars and not only failed to end the stupid war that we were in, but is starting 2 more. He promised to end foreign aid but instead he is increasing it. He promised to kick out the illegals and get rid of H1B visas but he did not kick out any substantial number of illegals, and wants to increase H1Bs. He promised freedom of speech and is now promoting censorship. He promised to release the Epstein files and instead led the clumsiest coverup in history.

Also he is now a lame duck. Everyone is jockeying for position in the post-Trump world, and because he has alienated most of his base, his support won’t matter in 2028. His legacy will be a legacy of disappointment and disillusionment.

I disagree with the idea that his casual relationship with the truth is a liability. His ability to lie effortlessly, and to seamlessly replace one lie with another, is a kind of super power. Without it, he never would have been President. All politicians lie, but Trump has advanced lying to a fine art.

I have a nice selection of tinfoil hats, but I didn’t wear one to J6. I did bring my phone and I watched them setting up the scenes and filming them, and I caught some of that activity on video. You may want to get your own tinfoil hat to block the mind control rays beaming from your TV, or better yet, turn it off and go outside.

So “Hang Mike Pence” was in our imagination and/or fabricated by the MSM somehow?
So “People breaking down doors and windows” to get into the capitol building was as well?
So “People getting hurt or killed” was as well?

Do you actually believe the crap coming out of your mouth, or are you just trying to assuage your guilt for being at J6?

I believe you are the one who is denying reality.

          1. Pedantic Grammar Police

The “Insurrection” narrative has been pretty definitively debunked. Only by keeping your eyes glued to CNN can you continue to live in a fantasy world where Trump tried to overthrow the government.

(Ed. Note: Only among a peculiar cohort.)

            1. Steven G

You didn’t answer my previous questions, so I assume your fealty to your god king, President Trump, won’t allow your brain to answer these:

All right, if it wasn’t an insurrection, what was it?
Did Joe Biden win the election?
If yes, is trying to prevent the legitimate winner of the presidency, because the people who were rioting not accepting of this fact, not a form of insurrection? If it is not insurrection, then what would you call it?

If you don’t believe Biden won the election, and you believe that the Jan 6 rioters were right in doing what they did, then you will need to provide evidence, which Donald Trump has promised for years, and has never delivered.

            2. Pedantic Grammar Police

You’re missing the point. I didn’t vote for Trump, and I see very clearly what he is. If you love him, or if you hate him, then you are buying his schtick. If you believe that the election was stolen, or if you believe that it was squeaky-clean, then you are buying one side of the two-faced media narrative. Both are false. Elections are designed to give legitimacy to an illegitimate system of rule by oligarchs who own the politicians in a fake 2-party system. The difference between Trump and Biden is purely stylistic. The policies that matter are identical; they only differ on fake hot-button issues that distract us from the real issues. Who can you vote for, if you don’t want more stupid wars? Who can you vote for, to make the government smaller?

            3. steven g

Wait a second… so you didn’t vote for Trump, but were at the Jan 6 insurrection? And you made videos? Pull my other leg. Why were you there then? For shits and giggles?

You still haven’t answered any of the questions, I noticed. Too scared to admit you’re part of the Trump cult?

It’s hard to converse with someone who is so evasive.

Saying that you think it doesn’t matter whether the election was stolen or not, is some high level conspiracy bullshit. Just man up, and say what you believe happened.

Yes, our government isn’t perfect, and yes, they tend to listen to their donors way more than the people as a whole. But that’s irrelevant to whether you think the election was stolen from Trump or not.

And today Trump apologized to Marjorie Taylor Greene……..oh, wait, that must have been one of the daymares I had while senile napping yesterday afternoon.

Now, back to managing the new group of cloned puppies before Scott cooks them. Tom Brady and I have something in common: Good looks and athletic skillz.

  6. Jeff

I think it was Boebert that was summoned to the situation room, not MTG.

[Ed. Note: You’re right. My bad. Thanks for the correction.]
