The Judge Hates Us

Joel Stashenko of the New York Law Journal reports of one bad judge in the City of Newburgh.  Before getting to this evil judge, it’s important to know a little something about Newburgh, since pretty much no one outside of Newburgh, NY knows anything about it, or cares to.

Its current state assemblyman, Thomas Kirwan, calls Newburgh “the South Bronx without the amenities.”

Residents in the South Bronx were offended.  It’s that ugly in Newburgh.

But like most places that aspire to be the South Bronx, Newburgh residents elected a judge.  This judge was named Peter M. Kulkin.  He came from experience; 17 years in the trenches with the Legal Aid Society.  That’s a lot more experience than a lot of judges I know, whose legal careers were spent in the back room of either another judge’s chambers or the party headquarters.  This was a man who put in his time in the courtroom, and who had to actually meet and greet real living people, lumped together by the generic name “defendant”.

And what did this man, Judge Kulkin do that was so evil?  Did he take payoffs?  No.  Did he slur Jews? Nope.  Then why did the Newburgh state assemblyman have this to say?

“To call him a liberal would be a gross insult to liberals,” Mr. Kirwan said. “He’s an anarchist.”

Anarchist?  Did he run on the Wobbly Party line?  No, no, no.  This is what Judge Kulkin did to raise the ire of the locals politicos.

On July 13, Judge Kulkin released a woman without bail after she was charged with vandalizing three police cruisers. To Lieutenant Charles Broe, who questioned the decision after the court session, Judge Kulkin said they were “only your cop cars,” according to Mr. Paolilli.

Judge Kulkin was castigated for being prejudiced against the police.  According to Police Chief Eric Paolilli, he just wasn’t showing the cops the degree of love they deserved.  This rogue judge. this judicial animal, actually treated defendants like human beings and police like human beings too, meaning that they didn’t get everything they wanted for the asking, and weren’t placed on a pedestal as the saviors of society, where anything they said became gospel.

So now they want Judge Kulkin off the bench for his gross misconduct.  You gotta love Newburgh.
