The End of Crime

& Federalism?  I was shocked to see a post by Mike that Crime & Federalism may be finished.  He says that Norm Pattis’ practice is too busy for him to blog anymore, and Mike is just burned out after 3 1/2 years.  “I feel like I’ve talked about everything interesting to talk about.”

C&F was one of the early, and best, criminal law blawgs.  Norm and Mike brought intelligence and balance to the blawgosphere, with real world insight.  If this is the end of C&F, it will be a great loss.

At the moment, there are numerous blawgs in the criminal law area.  Most, like Simple Justice, are relatively new.  Few have shown the staying power of a C&F, or Gideon’s A Public Defender.  Many blawgs start out gang-busters, then peter out pretty quickly.  It’s hard to write regularly.  It takes time.  It takes interest.  There’s no extrinsic benefit in doing it.

Mike writes about having said everything there is to say.  I would guess that he means that the struggle to find something that motivates him to write has overcome the desire.  This is a scary notion, though hardly surprising.  Some days, I have far more that I want to write about than hours in the day.  Other days, well, it’s harder.  But I’m still new at this, and I almost always find something that interests me.  Writing is my favorite way of expressing myself, and blawging is my outlet of choice.  How long that will be the case has yet to be seen.

But the blawgosphere will be poorer without Norm and Mike.  Even though there will be a number of criminal law blawgs around, there are some issues.  Some post infrequently, and without regular posting they fall off the radar.  Some are by lawyers without a great deal of legal experience, and reflect views and concerns that just aren’t of much interest to more seasoned lawyers.  Some are oriented toward academics, and offer little of practical value to a lawyer.  Some are self-aggrandizing, and serve primarily to market the lawyer’s services.

None of these fit Norm and Mike.  Their stuff was good, interesting, practical and sophisticated.  It seems unlikely that Mike would post of the demise of Crime & Federalism without forethought, and so I suspect it is a fait accompli.  But I hope they will reconsider and keep the blawg alive.  And if they don’t, I want to invite them to come over here any time they want and post.  At the very least, Norm and Mike should know that their efforts are appreciated.

Well, that would be a great loss, but I think I understand, not that nothing to write about, but finding the time write is not that easy. I guess this is something that happens to everyone.
