Cops are Cops, 24/7

For better or worse, New York’s Finest are cops all the time.  That means they are there to pull their off-duty weapon and stare down the liquor store bandit when they are there to buy a bottle of pink Catawba, or to teach a passing motorist a lesson in humility.

Enter the NYPDs answer to Thelma and Louise.  From Newsday,

Officers Michelle Anglin and Koleen Robinson were charged with assault, menacing and weapons possession for allegedly pummeling Marlon Smith so badly Friday that he needed 25 stitches.

One of the officers pointed a gun in Smith’s face, Smith told investigators.

“If these allegations prove true, it’s a horrendous case, a horrendous situation,” Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

Of course, that’s only what Kelly said in public.  In private, he laughed, “ha, the guy got beat up by two chicks!”  His chest swelled with pride.

The details are just so Bronx.

Authorities said Robinson, behind the wheel of her Chevy Suburban, was riding with Anglin when she pulled alongside Smith’s parked car in Williamsbridge because his driver’s side door was open.

“Close the door, you –,” one of the cops told Smith, 35, according to the criminal complaint.

Smith responded with an obscenity, and the officers attacked him, according to the complaint. Anglin allegedly squirted pepper spray in his face and Robinson punched him. In the ensuing melee, Robinson allegedly beat Smith with her collapsible baton and Anglin pistol-whipped him in the face.

See how prepared these two police officers were, despite the fact that they had a mere 2 and 3 years on the force.  Always concerned with potential hazards, like an open car door.  A collapsible baton and pepper spray at the ready.  And note the most professional thing about the encounter, that they were careful not to discharge their weapon and thereby risk death when a mere pistol whipping would suffice.

Sure, there was some colorful language involved, but this happened in the Bronx,  Anything less would have been unseemly.

But what these two fine officers mostly kept at the ready was their attitude.  They were cops.  Nobody messes with cops, whether on duty or off.  Nobody.

Marlon Smith found that out the hard way.  And he probably needed a lesson in humility as well, though perhaps our Thelma and Louise should have taught to the test.  Remember, these are New York’s Finest.  Think about what our Worst must be like.
