No matter who or where you are, you can’t help but be filled with the special spirit of the holiday season, peace on earth and goodwill toward man. Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas has one extra special gift on his list: a criminal investigation of any your fellow county attorneys who criticize you. With love, Andy.
From Nick Martin’s incomparable Heat City, Thomas’ Christmas Eve missive to former State Supreme Court Chief Justice Ruth McGregor, who has been charged with overseeing Thomas’ and Arpaio’s December to Remember accusations against those who criticize him, particularly Yavapai County Attorney Sheila Polk and Pinal County Attorney James Walsh, both of whom sent letters to the Arizona Republic criticizing Arpaio’s abuse of power. Polk called it “totalitarianism”.
Move by the ghost of Christmas future and a deathly fear of coal in his stocking, Thomas felt compelled to smack these traitors to the cause:
As the many supporters of Crazy Joe Arpaio, even those who are not quite 55, have some time to ponder between today and New Years Eve, perhaps they should consider whether those wild anarchists, Polk and Walsh, are really part of a vast conspiracy determined to undermine the pink fabric of Maricopa County, or whether Crazy Joe and his butt boil Thomas are engaged in a bizarre and outrageous abuse of their authority, the Constitution, and bent on seizing total control by accusing anyone who challenges their conduct as criminals.
But don’t feel badly for Crazy Joe and Andy Thomas this Christmas morning, as they huddle near the fire and conspire about who to indict next. At least they will always have each other, even as those who remained silent too long out of fear of what these lunatics might do have finally shown the courage to speak out against their abuses.
Merry Christmas, Maricopa.

Now, Thomas wants a former state Supreme Court justice to investigate his neighboring prosecutors as part of what he calls “an orchestrated campaign to pressure law enforcement in Maricopa County to drop charges against influential criminal defendants and suspects.”Obviously, when there are critics to be silenced, it can’t wait for New Years. No holiday good cheer will stand in the way of Arpaio and Thomas protecting the citizens of Maricopa County from the shrill words of these conspirators who seek to take advantage of their eggnog-addled minds. If they can only convince their sycophants that this is a massive conspiracy of politicians, judges, prosecutors and lawyers, then maybe all is not lost. After all, why believe all these people that Arpaio and Thomas are insane when you can believe in a vast conspiracy against them?
Thomas accused the other prosecutors of essentially breaking the law by criticizing him and the sheriff. He said the pair violated rules for attorneys in Arizona, as well as tainted the pool of possible jurors in the ongoing cases.

Given that time is money for lawyers, I would suggest you use your holiday time to start a post as follows: Thomas and Arpaio charge Ruth McGregor and (fill in blank) with “an orchestrated campaign to pressure law enforcement in Maricopa County to drop charges against influential criminal defendants and suspects.” I’ll leave the justified outrage to you.
You may need to save it into summer, but it will likely come. This would be darkly humorous if I didn’t live in their jurisdiction.
That post was written the minute I read McGregor’s name. There are no neutrals in Harlan County, or Maricopa.
