NYCLA Hosts Public Forum: Collateral Consequences of Convictions —
Post-Conviction Relief From Disabilities and Deportation Warnings on November 10

The New York County Lawyers’ Association’s (NYCLA) Judicial Section is sponsoring a free public forum, “Collateral Consequences of Convictions: Post-Conviction Relief From Disabilities and Deportation Warnings,” on November 10 at 6:00 PM at the NYCLA Home of Law, 14 Vesey Street. Forum panelists will discuss recent changes – from the Supreme Court’s landmark decision, Padillo v. Kentucky, which found that criminal defendants must be accurately advised of the probable/possible deportation consequences of guilty pleas, to new procedures enacted by the New York State Legislature for those who wish to obtain a Certificate of Relief from Disabilities.

Forum panelists are: Hon. James Yates, New York State Supreme Court; Hon. Harold Baer Jr., U.S. District Judge, Southern District of New York; McGregor Smyth, managing attorney, Civil Action Practice, The Bronx Defenders Office; and Seth Steed, staff attorney, Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem. The forum will be moderated by Keith Schmidt, court attorney, New York City Criminal Courts.
