Dersh is on the left. Toobin is on the right. Cooper is in the middle.
Some see Dersh as the voice of reason, fighting Trump Derangement Syndrome. Others, like Toobin, see him as a Trump apologist, pandering for the sake of keeping his mug on the telly as the former Harvard lawprof who takes a contrarian position to the more woke Larry Tribe.
It was retweeted by the Harvard law professor Laurence Tribe. His retweet was retweeted over 2,000 times:

Yet there’s no evidence anywhere that Haiti’s “high court” did this. There was no “emergency” session and there was no “agreement to unseal & release documents.” The event is fabricated.
But Toobin’s most prominent dig is that Dersh is a traitor to the cause.
This is not who you used to be.
Rarely has the distinction been expressed so clearly. Whether Dersh is the paragon of principle is a very real issue, as he certainly seems to be coming up with rationalizations that stretch the law a bit too far. But is the alternative, Toobin’s call to arms to hate everything Trump because it’s Trump, any better?
Has the student overtaken the teacher on their run up the mountain of righteousness? Is Toobin not loving his close-up and admiration by the #Resistance just as much as Dersh is loving his? And is there anyone who doesn’t think Larry Tribe has completely lost it since his romance with Louise Mensch?
Is there anyone for whom a principled view of law matters more than their Tribe?

See? That right there, total win. A 12 year old will be able to handle it and go verbal toe to toe. But an adult will only say something back that will allow you to attack their mother further. I mean yeah, in a real debate, where serious people discuss issues and they’re mature enough to allow the other party to make reasoned points in response, this strategy might not work for you. Fortunately the scenario I describe is mythical so no one has to ever worry about it. Just keep relentlessly attacking the other persons mom. So what if she had or , she probably wouldn’t have either of those if she wasn’t such a slut, amirite?

Too be a little more accurate, you should have said: Dersch is on the near left. Toobin is on the far left. Cooper is in the middle left.
Your restraint, while admirable, seemed to lack sincerity.

I don’t read that in Toobin’s position. He points out that real crimes were committed by members of Trump’s team; possibly including his family and Trump himself. The law called for a special investigator in this scenario, and one was appointed.
To be honest though, after watching this video a second time I think Dersh is embarrassed. He just thought this would be a good time to restate his long-held opinion about how to handle similar situations. I don’t think he considered the possibility that POTUS would quote him and bring Harvard into the conversation.
Neither Dersh nor Toobin are virgins in this dispute. Much as Dersh could well be seen as carrying Trump’s water, Toobin can be seen as trying to do anything to spill it.
OTOH, “I banged your mom” isn’t as effective coming from a virgin, anyway.
