Don’t, Just Don’t, Ever Do This. Ever

Some have called me prickly about how I manage the comments on my blog.  That’s fine.  Some have disagreed with me, stamping their feet over and over whilst lost in their own revelry about why they are so darn right and I am so darn wrong.  That’s fine too.

But something happened today that is not fine.  Not acceptable.  Not tolerable.

A commenter offered a quote attributed it to me.

He said: “If I were working for this guy (you), I wouldn’t be much longer.”

You said: “You don’t get to say you wouldn’t work for me, because you don’t have any money or a job, and I have both.”
Not having written or said any such thing, I offered a suggestion in response:

I think you need to read it again, as I see nothing of the sort written nor implied.  If this is what you’ve inferred, then you’ve missed the point entirely.

“Before you can assume to have a say in whether you would continue to work for… me, you would have to work for… me. It’s a before/after thing. You are not entitled to start with the presumption that [you] are already employed.”

-plus-

“…you don’t get a vote. That’s because I have the job to offer. You don’t.”

-equals-

“You don’t get to say you wouldn’t work for me, because you don’t have any money or a job, and I have both.”

Now I don’t give damn how entitled you believe you are to engage in intellectual dishonesty, even if you think your perspective is spot on and you are the smartest human being alive, as you Slackoisie often tend to do.  But,

DO NOT FABRICATE A QUOTE.  EVER.
You don’t get to create a quote by adding two plus two, 10 plus 10 or any other set of things.  Forget that this kid’s comprehension was seriously off-base, or that he missed the point by a mile.  It’s irrelevant.  Even if his understanding was perfect, it is not a quote unless someone actually says it.  Anything else is a lie.

Do it here and you will be banned.  This kid is banned.  Don’t do it.  Ever.

I hope I’ve made this sufficiently clear.
